Paris, December 9th, 2021 – PASQAL today announces that well known Quantum Physicist Nicolas Treps has accepted a new challenge as the company’s Scientific Advisor. He will play a crucial role as part of PASQAL‘s team building fault-tolerant quantum computers. As future iterations of Pasqal’s quantum computers are developed and released over the coming years, the company plans to eventually scale them up to one millions qubits.
Treps is a professor, entrepreneur and researcher at the renowned Kastler Brossel Laboratory in Paris, home to three Nobel Laureates. He is also a leading expert in quantum photonics. In 2013, he co-founded Cailabs, a world leader in light shaping technology for industrial applications.
As the newest member of the PASQAL family, Treps will provide key insights to the rest of the research and development team as the company continues to develop new quantum processor architectures. These architectures will combine neutral atoms and photonics, and will be scaled up over time.
This fault-tolerant generation of quantum computers is expected to emerge in the coming years, and will produce a physical error rate considerably lower than today’s norms, thanks to the application of the company’s innovative quantum error correction systems. One of PASQAL’s objectives in developing this generation of quantum computers is to suppress their logical error rate to the lowest achievable levels.

Nicolas Treps is professor at Sorbonne Universite in Paris, France, in charge of the multimode quantum optics group at Laboratoire Kastler Brossel and co-director of the Quantum Information Center Sorbonne. He develops novel approaches to measurement-based quantum computing and quantum parameter estimation with optical frequency combs. He co-founded the start-up company Cailabs, that design, manufacture and sell innovative photonics products for free-space transmission, industrial lasers, local area networks (LANs) and telecommunications.
